Hallux rigidus

Definition

Degenerative arthritis of the metatarsophalangeal joint of the great toe

Therapy

Shoes with stiff sole or orthotic devices to immobilize the joint.

Surgical Procedures

Permanent immobilization of the joint (arthrodesis), which is an established and reliable procedure.

Alternatively, joint replacement may be performed. However, long time follow-up studies are not available yet and the range of motion of the joint may be limited. At times other procedures, e.g. removal of excess bone (cheilectomy) or correction of the first metatarsal bone may be indicated.
